알카텔-루슨트가 퀄컴과의 차세대 스몰셀 솔루션 공동 개발 계획을 발표했다. 이는 최근 회사가 발표한 3개년 사업 전략과 맥락을 같이 하고 있으며 중점 사업 분야 중 하나인 무선(Wireless)에서의 기술력 강화 그리고 업계 핵심 기업들과의 협력 확대 노력을 보여준다.

알카텔-루슨트(www.alcatel-lucent.com)와 퀄컴(www.qualcomm.com)의 자회사인 퀄컴 테크놀로지는 차세대 스몰셀 솔루션 개발을 위한 협력 계획을 30일 (프랑스 현지 시간) 밝혔다.

시장조사기관 인포네틱스의 2013년 2월 보고서에 따르면 2016년 스몰셀 매출이 약 21억달러에 달하며 그 중 4G 스몰셀 비중이 37%를 차지할 것으로 예상했다. 또한, 글로벌 시장에서의 중심축이 가정용(74%에서 30%로)에서 기업용(거의 50%까지 성장)으로 급속히 이동할 것으로 전망했다.

‘초소형’ 기지국으로 대형 기지국 장비를 많이 구축할 수 없는 문제를 해결하기 위한 해법이다. 트래픽 집중 지역(예:강남역)이나 시골(전파 잘 안 닿는 곳에) 촘촘하게 설치해서 데이터 트래픽 수용하는 기술&장비다. 커버리지 개선 & 음영 지역 커버 효과를 위해 사용되고 있다. 예를 들어, SK텔레콤은 콘텔라 라는 국산 회사의 스몰셀 장비를 사용하고 있다.

이번 협력을 통해 도심지역, 쇼핑몰, 기업 현장 등에서 무선 네트워크 성능을 보완, 향상시킬 스몰셀 솔루션을 개발한다. 이를 통해 3G, 4G, 와이파이 네트워크를 강화하여 가정 및 기업 환경에서의 무선 접속성을 높인다는 계획이며, 이는 알카텔-루슨트의 무선 관련 전문 기술과 혁신 그리고 퀄컴 테크놀로지의 모바일 네트워킹 기술이 결합된 차세대 스몰셀은 초광대역 무선 통신을 가능하게 할 것이다.

광대역의 비디오와 게임 애플리케이션을 구동하는 스마트폰, 태블릿 PC 및 기타 모바일 기기의 사용이 점차 증가하고 있다. 이에 따라 급증하는 모바일 데이터 수용량과 네트워크 커버리지에 대한 요구를 비용 효율적으로 충족시키기 위한 해결책으로 스몰셀 솔루션이 통신사업자들의 관심을 집중시키고 있다.

알카텔-루슨트와 퀄컴은 스몰셀 도입을 가속화시키고 모바일 데이터가 무선 네트워크에 미치는 영향을 최소화시키고자 한다. 이를 위해 두 회사는 퀄컴 테크놀로지의 스몰셀 칩셋 제품군 FSM9900을 기반으로 알카텔-루슨트의 차세대 라이트라디오(lightRadio™) 스몰셀 제품을 개발하기로 하고 전략적 R&D 프로그램에 공동 투자할 계획이다. 양사의 공동 개발은 이미 시작되었으며 신규 솔루션은 2014년 시범망 적용, 2015년 1분기 상용화될 예정이다.

Alcatel-Lucent and Qualcomm Technologies plan to develop next-generation of small cells for ultra-broadband wireless access

Wireless leaders plan to develop 3G/4G base stations that enhance wireless connectivity in residential and enterprise environments such as campuses and retail locations.

Paris, July 30, 2013 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. (NASDAQ: QCOM), announced today a plan to collaborate to develop small cell base stations that enhance 3G, 4G and WiFi networks to improve wireless connectivity in residential and enterprise environments. These next-generation small cells would combine Alcatel-Lucent’s proven expertise and innovation in developing small cell solutions with Qualcomm Technologies’ industry-leading mobile and networking technologies, to enable ultra-broadband wireless communications.

The planned collaboration brings the two industry leaders in wireless communications together in the development of small cells to enhance wireless network reception in environments such as urban areas, shopping malls and other enterprise venues.

With the growing popularity of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices using high-bandwidth video and gaming applications, wireless network operators and service providers are looking to small cells to cost-effectively meet the rapidly expanding demand for mobile data capacity and network coverage. By working together, Alcatel-Lucent and Qualcomm Technologies intend to accelerate the adoption of small cells and alleviate the impact of mobile data on wireless networks.

To facilitate this acceleration, the two companies plan to jointly invest in a strategic R&D program to develop the next generation of Alcatel-Lucent lightRadio™ Small Cell products featuring Qualcomm Technologies’ FSM9900 family of Small Cell chipsets.
