HP and SAP Advance SAP HANA through Joint Innovation

Prototype system demonstrated for the first time at SAPPHIRE NOW

SAP와 HP간에 협력이 긴밀해지고 있다. 두 회사는 '프로젝트 크라켄(Kraken)'을 공개했다. 이 프로젝트를 아주 간단히 설명한다면 SAP의 인메모리 데이터베이스 제품인 하나(HANA)를 HP의 서버 위에서 가동하는 것이다. 두 회사가 힘을 합친 것을 보면 어플라이언스라고 봐도 무방하지 않을까 싶다.

HP는 오라클과 엑사데이터 1을 공동개발했는데 오라클이 썬을 인수하면서 팽당했다. SAP 입장에서도 절친 오라클이 ERP나 CRM 시장으로 치고 들어오면서 배신을 때렸기 때문에 와신상담을 했고, 사이베이스 인수와 HANA를 통해 DB 시장으로 한발 한발 진군중이다. HANA의 반응도 좋다. SAP 제품 사용하는 고객들은 웬만하면 HANA는 다 쓰게 된다.

SAP는 다양한 서버 업체와 협력해 왔다. HP, DELL, IBM 등등.. 그런데 이번에 HP와 더 손을 잡았다. 이 서버는 인텔 제온 E7 프로세서가 탑재돼 있다. 인텔 x86 서버 칩 중에 가장 강력한 제품이다. 아마 한국에서는 유닉스 부서가 담당할 것 같다. ^.^

SAP가 HANA로 DB 시장에 들어오자 오라클은 2012년 10월 초 미국 샌프란시스코에서 열린 '오라클 오픈월드'에서 3세대 엑사데이터를 공개했었다. 3세대 제품은 모두 메모리 기반이었다. SAP가 인메모리로 차별화하지 아예 오라클도 모든 제품을 인메모리와 플래시 메모리도 도배했다.

오라클이 기업용 애플리케이션 시장에 진입하고 또 썬을 인수하면서 SW+HW+Service를 하나로 통합 시키기 위해 노력하고 있지만 성공적이라고 판단하기는 이르다. 그다지 좋은 시너지가 나오고 있다고 볼 수 없다. 여전히 DB 시장의 막강한 영향력으로 버티고 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

SAP는 오라클의 반격에 잘 대응했다. 오히려 DB 시장에 치고 들어오고 있다. 정면 승부보다는 자신들의 입지를 다질 수 있는 자사 제품군과 연동되는 분야부터 차근차근 진입중이다. 이에 비해 HP는 오라클과 결별하면서 잃은 게 훨씬 크다. 가뜩이나 애플과 구글 때문에 PC 사업도 암울하다.

두 회사의 이번 협력이 오라클의 당한 공통점이 있는 두 회사에게 반격의 신호탄을 의미하는 것인지 기대된다. IBM을 잡겠다고 꿈꿔오던 절친 세 회사. 오라클의 배반으로 인해 틀어진 관계 속에서 어떤 협력과 경쟁이 기다리고 있을까.

ORLANDO, Fla. — HP and SAP AG (NYSE:SAP) today announced advancements to a joint initiative, codenamed “Project Kraken,” to improve business processes and mitigate risks for customers.

A test system, built from years of HP server technology innovations and optimized with the in-memory SAP HANA® database for SAP® Business Suite, will be demonstrated for the first time at SAPPHIRE® NOW, which is being held in Orlando, Fla., through today.

Unveiled last January, Project Kraken is a coinnovation effort between HP and SAP that focuses on SAP HANA, enabling customers to reduce the time required to rapidly transact, analyze and process large amounts of data within a single server.

Project Kraken’s goal is to provide customers additional choice in scalability for large, online transaction processing applications, with requirements for real-time analytical insights into this data. This allows organizations, including retailers, financial institutions, utilities and governments, another alternative to quickly detect patterns, analyze massive data volumes on the fly, and perform their operations quickly.

The prototype system, optimized with 16 Intel® Xeon® processor E7 family (codenamed Ivy Bridge-EX) central processing units (CPUs) and 12 terabytes of memory, has been engineered specifically for complex, data-intensive workloads. These include supply chain, customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and data analysis. HP and SAP chose Intel processors because of the company’s leading-edge technology that enables customers to improve system performance.

The solution leverages years of engineering and design across HP’s enterprise server business for customers that need the very highest levels of performance and availability, and where minutes of downtime can mean millions of dollars lost.

With this solution, customers can consolidate multiple online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytic processing (OLAP) databases into one vertically scalable server with improved performance. This will further the capabilities of SAP HANA, providing real-time analytics on transactional data, eliminating the need to spend time and resources moving data between environments.
